Update on Art Deco Garden, Headingley, Leeds

Once a garden is designed and the hard landscape is constructed, the soil is carefully prepared for planting and the plants are planted. This is the most exciting part of garden design for me! A good garden designer will work with the Client to understand how much maintenance a garden will receive year on year. This is extremely helpful for the Client because appropriate plants can be selected so the garden looks beautiful now, and into the future. And, of course, a good garden designer will select plants so that there is something of interest to enjoy throughout the seasons.

Below you will see more up to date photographs of the garden which I designed for an Art Deco house in Headingley, Leeds. If you want to refresh your memory, here are the the photos that were taken soon after the planting was complete. Below you can see more recent pictures of the same garden.

Above: view from the top of the garden looking back towards the house. The most dominant feature in the garden is by far the house! Strong, straight lines throughout the garden refer back to the house.

The raised water feature is just big enough to feel generous, without taking over the rather narrow garden. Silhouettes of Nectaroscordum siculum bring early summer interest in a bed of evergreen ferns including the lovely hart’s tongue fern  Asplenium scolopendrium.

More Nectaroscordum siculum towards the top of the garden give unity.

The design conscious Client found a stone mason who made these lovely benches which sit beautifully with the Art Deco house.
